File and Print Sharing

A variety of systems are used for file and printer sharing:
  • AppleTalk
  • CIFS
  • NetWare
  • NFS & lpr
  • Others?
Of these, only NetWare provides a management architecture that scales to the University as a whole.
  • Service Announcement & Resolution
  • Authentication & Authorization

NTS manages the root of the NDS tree and ULAs manage their own subtrees.

There are over 2700 SAPs.

All of the above listed systems provide file and print services. The key issue is the support structure surrounding these core services. This includes:

Currently, only Novell's NDS scales to the University level as a whole. The high number of SAPs (Service Announcements), which must be kept in tables on routers, does cause some problems. Careful filtering of SAPs and a gradual move to NetWare/IP should resolve that particular issue.
